Job Description:

Function of Position

Adjunct faculty prepare and teach courses in the department, develop new educational materials, and assist with the assessment of student learning, as appropriate.   Classes may be assigned at the Brighton and/or Downtown Campus (or other sites, as needed).  Adjunct faculty report to the chairperson of the Visual & Performing Arts Department.  The successful candidate will bring a passion for teaching and a desire to support and mentor MCC students as they pursue educational and career goals.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates and maintains current subject knowledge
  • Teaches courses and evaluates student performance in 3-D Design: Foundations and Sculpture I as per guidelines set by the department and Monroe Community College
  • Teaches sections of courses, as available, and as outlined by the contract
  • Prepares lesson plans and creates instructional materials and activities for student engagement
  • Prepares Course Information Sheet/Syllabus/Outlines in accordance with department and College guidelines
  • Establishes and maintains an engaging and supportive classroom environment
  • Maintains student attendance records, grades, and other records according to department and College guidelines and submits them in a timely manner
  • Assists department with student retention and completion initiatives including early alert
  • Develops innovative teaching pedagogy to facilitate learning
  • Incorporates high impact teaching practices into course design, as appropriate
  • Actively engages in pedagogical and academic discipline professional development
  • Demonstrates excellent time management skills, and the ability to prioritize workflow and multi-task
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities assigned by the department chair, as appropriate

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s  degree in Fine Arts with a concentration in sculpture, ceramics, or American Crafts from a regionally accredited higher education institution
  • Demonstrated ability to teach the following courses: 3-Dimensional Design Foundations and Sculpture I
  • At least three-years’ experience working with and teaching the use of power saws, belt sanders, and power tools, as well as implementing safety measures and instruction within the classroom environment.
  • Demonstrated track-record of exhibiting sculpture on a national/international level for at least the past three years
  • Demonstrate ability to teach both the Elements and Principles of Design as they relate to 3-D Design within a range of sculpture-based courses
  • Demonstrate ability to work with and teach different materials utilizing the additive and subtractive approaches of art-making along with basic casting techniques
  • Demonstrated deep understanding of the history of sculpture, along with the understanding of the Contemporary Sculpture Scene
  • Must be available to teach in person at MCC’s Brighton Campus location during assigned class offerings, which could be scheduled mornings, afternoons, and/or evenings throughout the week
  • Evidence of proficiency with technology

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree from a regionally-accredited higher education institution
  • Knowledge of, or experience in, implementing a variety of teaching strategies by creating 3-D/Sculpture-based projects
  • Awareness of the potential value of technology as a tool for teaching
  • Experience with computerized student record management
