Official Title: Writing Consultant, Academic Foundations, Learning Support Systems

Function of Position:

Reporting to the Director of Learning Support Systems, Writing Consultants are professional staff who work with students to help them  develop effective writing strategies and become self-regulated learners.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Meet with students on a one-on-one basis to provide learning assistance related to writing
  • Help students with the writing process – not with editing papers
  • Using guiding questions, elicit critical thinking in students, aiding the students understanding of his/her writing
  • Help students understand the structure of topic sentences, thesis statements, paragraphs, and essays
  • Help students understand grammar mechanics
  • Develop and nurture rapport with students, peers, and faculty
  • Attend training activities to comply with certification requirements before and/or during semesters
  • Collaborate with faculty on providing workshops and in setting tutoring expectations
  • Adhere to tutoring center protocol and tutoring expectations as outlined in the Tutor Handbook
  • Visit classrooms, as needed, to introduce students to tutoring

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned master’s or doctoral degree from a regionally accredited higher education institution in English, Rhetoric and Composition, or related field
  • Experience working with diverse college populations
  • Two years of tutoring experience
  • Proficient with technology
