JOB SUMMARY:
RTS is seeking a skilled Body Shop Technician to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for performing vehicle body repairs, painting, and metal fabrication. Duties include preparing vehicles for paint or vinyl wraps, welding, and using various tools and equipment to restore vehicle bodies to their original condition. You will also be required to read and interpret OEM diagrams, repair seats, and install electronic signs. Safety, attention to detail, and efficiency are key in ensuring all work meets the highest quality standards.
COMPENSATION: Starting rate is $28.18 per hour. You will reach top rate within 3 years (current top rate for 2025 is $40.27)
This is a Union environment in association with the Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 282.
AVAILABLE SHIFT: Monday – Friday, 2:00PM – 10:30PM
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Basic computer skills to access and complete work orders in AssetWorks.
- Ability to prepare vehicles for painting and/or vehicle wrapping as needed.
- Proficiency in installing and repairing vinyl bus wraps.
- Must pass a medical respirator test provided onsite to perform paint work in the Paint Booth.
- Ability to mix paints and thinners for proper application on various surfaces.
- Competence in safely operating an oxygen/acetylene cutting torch.
- Skills in acetylene welding, cutting, burning, and brazing on all metal types.
- Proficiency in using electric welders (Mig/Tig), plasma cutters, sheet metal brakes, frame pulling equipment, hydraulic body repair presses, and other body shop tools.
- Experience in metal fabrication and welding on vehicles and facilities as required.
- Ability to create vinyl signs and decals using a vinyl cutter.
- Capability to repair seats and electronic signs.
- Ability to read and interpret OEM vehicle body and chassis diagrams.
- Experience in performing major body overhauls and repairs.
- Commitment to completing work safely, efficiently, and thoroughly.
- Possession of a NYS Heavy Duty Vehicle Inspector’s License or qualifications that meet Federal Regulation 49 CFR 396.19, 396.25.
- Successful completion of forklift training provided onsite, and the ability to operate a forklift safely.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration. The employee works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to risks. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
REQUIREMENTS:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum of two (2) years of attendance at an accredited diesel mechanics school, in addition, may also have completed a certified course of study of the same but not limited to: Auto Repair, Hydraulics, Diesel Engine Repairs, Battery Electric Vehicle Repairs, Electrical Systems Repair, Welding, Body and Fabrication work.
OR
- Work experience, verifiable by employment records, may be substituted two years for one for educational requirement.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have complete set of tools to perform all jobs assigned.
- Must obtain a New York State CDL Class B permit with passenger and air brake endorsement prior to start date. Must be able to obtain and maintain a New York State CDL Class B license with passenger and air brake endorsement within 90 days of date of hire.
- Must possess a New York State CDL Class A permit with towing endorsement for vehicles with a Gross Combination Weight Rating over 26,000 lbs. (can obtain at a later date). Must be able to obtain and maintain a New York State CDL Class A license with towing endorsement for vehicles with a Gross Combination Weight Rating over 26,000 lbs. within 90 days of date of hire.
- English proficiency is required due to the safety-sensitive nature of this position. To ensure the safety of employees, customers and the general public, an employee holding this position must be able to read, speak and understand the English language. This proficiency is an essential requirement of this job due to the need to effectively communicate and collaborate with English speaking co-workers and supervisors regarding work and safety related matters and tasks. In addition, an employee in this role must be able to read and comprehend materials written in English such as, but not limited to, specifications, manuals, and other job-related documents.
